Under the leadership of CEO Radha Muthiah, the Capital Area Food Bank sourced and supplied the food to make more than 76 million meals this year, providing sustenance to some of the D.C. region’s nearly 500,000 people facing food insecurity.
Before Covid, Muthiah says the region was beginning to see a reduction in food insecurity. “The pandemic reversed that,” she says. “We saw an immediate spike in need after Covid.”
Muthiah and her team immediately went into action and delivered 71% more meals in fiscal 2021 than in the previous fiscal year and a 250% spike from pre-pandemic levels. She anticipates that this heightened demand for food will continue well into 2022. “Food insecurity is prevalent across the entire region,” Muthiah says. “Hunger exists in every ZIP code in our region.”
