Historic Republic Gardens nightclub reopens as Elements. Here’s a look around the U Street space.

The storied former Republic Gardens nightclub where legendary musicians including Cab Calloway and Ella Fitzgerald performed has taken on a new element, or elements, more precisely.

The nondescript, four-level building at 1355 U St. NW reopened earlier this month as Elements DC, with each level of the nearly 10,000-square-foot building featuring a different element: earth, water, fire and air. It shouldn’t come as a surprise which of the four elements is highlighted on the rooftop deck or, for that matter, that bathrooms take up half of the water floor.

Austin Haag, who is part of the ownership group behind Elements DC, is also behind the conversion of the former The Codmother space at 1334 U St. NW, which has been turned into a smaller, more intimate bar called The Alchemist. That space, with room for about 50 people, has been designed to preserve as much of Codmother’s subterranean wood finishes and other interior designs as possible.
