Harris Teeter near Capitol Hill to close after nearly 15 years

A Harris Teeter grocery store that was hailed as a sign of progress for the Hill East neighborhood when it opened nearly 15 years ago will close permanently at the end of the year.

The Harris Teeter at 1350 Potomac Ave. SE, in the Jenkins Row condominium development, will close by Jan. 22, the grocery store chain confirmed Monday. Neighborhood blog The Hill is Home first tweeted the news.

“Harris Teeter made a strategic decision to close this location only after careful consideration. In the coming weeks, the Company will work closely with its valued associates to assist them through the closing process,” the company said in a statement. It plans to offer employees the opportunity to transfer to other stores, it added.

The Matthews, North Carolina grocer, which is owned by Cincinnati’s Kroger Co., opened the store in 2007 to much fanfare. Since then, the NoMa store at 1201 First St. NE opened in 2010 and the Navy Yard store at 401 M St. SE opened in 2013. Harris Teeter has one other…
