Great Falls couple gifts Virginia Tech $35M, biggest alumni gift in university’s history

A Great Falls couple will give Virginia Tech $35 million, the largest gift ever from an alumnus, for a new engineering building — what will be largest facility on the school’s main Blacksburg campus.

The commitment from Norris Mitchell, who graduated from Virginia Tech in 1958, and his wife Wendy, who briefly attended the university, will be used to replace Randolph Hall, an engineering building built in the 1950s. Their funding will go toward construction and programming.

The new building will be named the Wendy and Norris E. Mitchell ’58 Hall, pending approval from the university’s board of visitors, and is expected to be more than 70% larger than the original Randolph Hall, as its college of engineering continues to grow. The college — Virginia Tech’s largest — includes 12 departments and two schools, and its enrollment in 2020 totaled more than 12,000 students.
