PJ Ross has been around the construction business all of his working life, but even he is surprised by what the past year and a half has brought to the industry.
What began as a labor job at 16 has grown into a finance career culminating in his current chief financial officer role at Hitt Contracting, Greater Washington’s 10th-largest general contractor. The Covid-19 pandemic brought much uncertainty to the company’s 1,130 employees, but Ross stuck to a tough line: no layoffs, no late payments and no debt.
The company credits Ross with leading part of its pandemic response team to develop a four-phase return-to-office strategy for its 12 locations, as well as its communication and policies to help keep its construction workers, and the 1,350 projects they delivered nationwide last year, safe and secure. To Ross, the months of Covid-19 restrictions were an equalizer: He faced the same uncertainty that many of his front-line employees did.
