CACI boosts its satellite expertise with deal to buy photonics company

CACI International Inc. (NYSE: CACI) returned to its mergers and acquisition strategy this week, announcing Wednesday it has a deal to acquire SA Photonics Inc. for $275 million.

The disclosure came less than a week after CACI announced, during its Oct. 28 earnings call, that it had acquired Charlottesville firm Bluestone Analytics and a second company, unnamed so far, for $120.3 million.

The SA Photonics purchase will provide the Reston technology and services contractor with new offerings centered on free-space optical (FSO) communications, or essentially using laser-based communications that can be deployed to airborne, space, terrestrial and underwater systems. Based in Los Gatos, California, SA Photonics develops and produces FSO communication systems that can transmit high-data rates, but with a lower threat of signal detection or interception.
