Avocado Green Mattress sets opening date for first D.C. store

Organic mattress-in-a-box manufacturer Avocado Green Mattress is opening its first D.C. outpost on Black Friday.

The new store at 3336 M St. in Georgetown’s Cady’s Alley will debut at 10 a.m. Friday. The space was previously occupied by Rent The Runway. The Washington Business Journal’s Daniel J. Sernovitz reported in February that Avocado signed a five-year lease on the nearly 5,000-square-foot space.

It is just the fifth brick-and-mortar store for the online retailer and only its second on the East Coast.

The Hoboken, New Jersey, company produces its handmade mattresses in the Los Angeles area. They are made with certified organic and nontoxic materials, adding a green wrinkle to the mattress-in-a-box trend that includes brands like Casper Sleep Inc. (NYSE: CSPR) and Leesa Sleep LLC. Avocado has also expanded its wares into sustainable bedding and furniture, as well as beauty products and attire under the respective brand names of Reed + Gwen and Hass.
