UMd. launches group licensing program for student-athletes

Want to buy a University of Maryland football jersey featuring quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa or a basketball jersey featuring Eric Ayala as a gift this holiday season? That may soon be possible thanks to a new program launched by the university’s athletics department.

The program will enable Terrapin student-athletes on all 20 of the university’s teams to profit off of their name, image and likeness (NIL) with Maryland’s official trademarks and logos by voluntarily opting into a group licensing agreement. The Brandr Group (TBG), a brand management, marketing and licensing agency will manage and administer the program.

While state laws and new NCAA rules implemented this summer gave college athletes the ability to receive financial compensation by selling their NIL, they were not given free rein to use university trademarks and logos.
