River Farm is no longer for sale, its owners announced Tuesday, effectively bringing the yearlong fight over the historic property’s future to a close.
The American Horticultural Society, fresh off a major shake-up of its board of directors, said it was taking the 27-acre property off the market. The site will “continue to be our national headquarters and remain a priceless asset for the general public and future generations to enjoy,” the nonprofit said. The decision comes after neighbors, conservationists and local politicians banded together to block the sale of the Potomac River-adjacent property, which has long been viewed as a valuable community gathering space near Mount Vernon.
“Throughout the yearlong debate over the future of River Farm, we have always been convinced that there is a strong and viable path forward — with AHS as the steward of the property, supported by like-minded friends and partners,” the five remaining members of the AHS board wrote in a statement,…
