Protesters break into McMillan property, briefly stop demolition

A trio of protesters briefly broke into the McMillan sand filtration plant in Northwest D.C. Monday afternoon, stopping demolition work on the site for a few hours after chaining themselves to construction equipment. 

The group entered the property through some construction fencing, according to protest organizers, attracting several dozen Metropolitan Police Department officers to the area. Police allowed all three to leave after they voluntarily unlocked the chains and large metal shackles they’d used to bind themselves to three backhoes on the property. An MPD spokeswoman confirmed that officers did not arrest or file charges against any of the demonstrators.

According to Chris Otten, a fierce opponent of the tortured redevelopment of the property, the three protesters were longtime skeptics of the project: Rosina Memolo, Jim Schulman and Kerry Kemp.
