Microsoft, Amazon reach agreement on former AWS exec Charlie Bell, allowing him to start new role

Former Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) executive Charlie Bell is cleared to start as the leader of a cybersecurity engineering team for Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT), according to a report from GeekWire.

Bell had defected from Amazon’s cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services, after 23 years in August, and a month later he said he had taken a position with its cloud rival.

Microsoft confirmed Bell’s start date.

“After constructive discussions with Amazon, Charlie Bell started his new role on October 11, focused on advancing cybersecurity capabilities that will benefit the tech sector and the broader economy,” said Frank Shaw, corporate vice president of communications.

Bell’s sudden departure from Amazon and its senior leadership team, and subsequent hiring by Microsoft, could have resulted in a noncompete issue between the companies.
