Looking for a Virginia mountain retreat? You likely won’t find many that are higher.

At the Washington Business Journal, we often try to show you the most expensive and most luxurious houses on the market in Greater Washington.

This is not one of those stories.

Instead, we take you to Greene County, Virginia, about 100 miles southwest of the District, where a small home on the market for $499,900 has the rare distinction of sitting at about the highest elevation of any private home you can find in the region.

“The long and short of it, from what I am aware of, at about 3,300 feet up, it is about the highest elevation for a private property on the entire East Coast — along with all the other homes along the way there,” said Jake McNemar of Re/Max Crossroads in Culpeper, Virginia, who is representing the seller of 2343 Flattop Mountain Road.

The home itself is unique — a three-story, octagon-shaped, custom-made house on a 10-acre assemblage on Flattop Mountain. It has windows in every direction looking out at Shenandoah National Park and the surrounding area.
