When Elizabeth Lan Davis was elected by shareholders as chair of law firm Murphy & McGonigle in June, the moment marked more than just the next step in her extensive law career. It was a step that she hadn’t even seen on her radar when she was starting out.
“I’m an Asian-American woman and a child of immigrants,” she says. “It didn’t seem to be something in the realm of possibility. Growing up, I don’t think there was an Asian woman character on ‘L.A. Law.’ It’s only recently that you’ve started to see more women of color in senior roles. Growing up, I didn’t have those female role models to aspire after.”
Now, as she leads the firm’s more than 20 attorneys and 40 support staff, Lan Davis says she’s focused on making sure the next generation has a more obvious path.
“It makes being a sponsor and a mentor that much more important to me and to encourage others in my firm to serve in those roles,” she says.
