Hechinger Mall owners seeking replacement tenants after Modell’s closes

New York City-based Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. is seeking replacement tenants at its Hechinger Mall in Northeast D.C., now that Modell’s Sporting Goods has shuttered its location at the retail center along the busy crossing known as the “starburst intersection.”

The sporting goods chain announced plans in March 2020 to close all of its stores, including the one at 1518 Benning Road NE, as part of its larger bankruptcy liquidation. The closure left Ashkenazy with roughly 16,186 square feet of retail space to fill, on top of a handful of smaller empty storefronts.

Now, it has retained KLNB to market the property, which has nearly 20,000 square feet of vacancies. That’s not counting a 1,700-square-foot lease just signed with City Mobile and a nearly 8,900-square-foot space that is at lease, according to KLNB marketing material.
