Dr. Thomas Gleason, the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s director of cardiac surgery research, is earning an approximate annual salary of $1 million — a record sum for the eight years we’ve been analyzing state salary data in Maryland, Virginia and the District.
The top earners on Maryland’s state payroll have typically come from the University of Maryland Medical Center and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. And top salaries have often been the high six-figures, but this is the first time a state salary in our region has touched the million-dollar mark. Gleason joined UMd.’s medical school in June 2021 from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he was chief of the division of cardiac surgery and co-executive director of the hospital’s heart and vascular center.
