I was born in Berkeley, California, when my father was finishing his Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley. As soon as he completed the program, he was offered an opportunity in Colombia, where my family is from, and we moved back before I reached the age of 1. We were a very traditional family, ultimately with six children. My father was an intellectual and educator, and my mother was a journalist who worked as a general manager for the Jesuit magazine.
