Organizers of the Marine Corps Marathon said Friday the annual race set for late October has been canceled “due to security and safety precautions currently in place.”
It’s the second consecutive year the annual event — one of most well-attended marathons in the country that typically eclipses 20,000 finishers — has been canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Organizers said all related festivities for the Arlington-based race are also canceled this year.
The race itself will move to a virtual format, where runners can take on a route of their choosing as opposed to congregating with other runners on a course that typically traverses Arlington and the District. The marathon went the virtual route last year as well. This year’s virtual race must be completed between Oct. 1 and Nov. 10, according to an announcement.
