How Covid-19 made coworkers out of these two competing D.C.-area events business owners

A pair of veteran event planners have gone from being competitors to coworkers in response to the Covid-19 pandemic that forced the industry to largely pivot from large, in-person gatherings to virtual and hybrid programs.

RJ Whyte Event Production, whose clients include the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Washington Performing Arts and National Geographic Society among its clients, has acquired Bravo! Events for an undisclosed price. Bravo! chief executive, Nancy Shaffer, has joined RJ White as the company’s chief creative officer as part of the deal.

Shaffer and RJ Whyte’s founder and principal, Roger Whyte II, were driving forces behind the Coalition of D.C. Event Professionals, an advocacy group with about 1,700 members that formed during the pandemic. On the sidelines of effort, about three months ago, the pair began talking about a possible union between their two firms.
