D.C. taps Children’s National to partner on new St. E’s hospital

Children’s National Hospital will provide health care for kids at a future hospital in Southeast D.C., city officials announced Wednesday.

The District pediatric health system has entered into a letter of intent with Mayor Muriel Bowser and Universal Health Services Inc. (NYSE: UHS), the Pennsylvania health care company that will run the new facility on the St. Elizabeths East campus in Ward 8.

Under that plan, Children’s National’s doctors, nurses, physician assistants and other medical staff will operate the hospital’s pediatric emergency department, neonatal intensive care unit and nursery, said Michelle McGuire, executive vice president and chief strategy officer for Children’s National. That breaks down to include 20 beds and one trauma bed in the pediatric ER, 12 NICU beds and five beds in an observation unit.
