Opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing at the Breckenridge Nordic Center or snowboarding at Breckenridge Ski Resort aside, Breckenridge, or “Breck” to locals, also offers a lively beer scene, quaint galleries and boutiques, a flourishing arts district and charming Victorian-era buildings.

Seward, Alaska

While Girdwood, Alaska, beckons to ski bums with its fresh powder, crisp air and access to the Chugach Mountains, for an outside-the-box getaway, consider Seward, says Alex Howard, managing editor of the U.S. edition of Lonely Planet magazine. Whether you want to take an excursion to nearby Resurrection Bay or visit the snow-dusted Kenai Fjords National Park, which houses Exit Glacier, there are plenty of diversions. Exit Glacier is closed off to cars in winter, but it’s still accessible for cross-country skiing, fat biking, snowmobiling and dog sledding. Howard suggests hiring a guide for glacier trekking to admire the area’s captivating cliffs and alpine glaciers in their full glory. Also consider a park ranger-guided boat tour in Kenai Fjords with outfitter Major Marine Tours to observe fjords, whales and fascinating sea life up close.

North Conway, New Hampshire

If your idea of a perfect winter escape involves gliding down snow-dusted peaks and lacing up your boots for cross-country trails, Potter suggests heading to North Conway, a classic New England ski town on the eastern side of the White Mountains in Mount Washington Valley. Take your pick from a variety of nearby ski areas, including Cranmore, which is about 2 miles away from the town’s main village and boasts a ski school along with off-slope activities such as snowshoeing and sleigh rides. After embracing quality time in the great outdoors, retire to luxurious accommodations like the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole in Teton Village, where you can relieve any lingering tension with a classic Swedish alpine massage.

With its massive rock outcroppings blanketed in powder under the Tofane Range, the area offers plenty of picturesque backdrops. The setting is known for old Hollywood glamour, attracting A-listers such as Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn, and garnered a reputation as a winter wonderland after hosting the 1956 Winter Olympics. Aside from its charming old world feel, “Cortina is very stylish,” Potter adds, noting that the area appeals to a well-heeled crowd. Located on Lake Wanaka with New Zealand’s Southern Alps in the backdrop, Wanaka is a skier and snowboarder paradise. If the alpine scenery doesn’t take your break away, the adrenaline-pounding advanced ridges, chutes and bowls at nearby Treble Cone surely will. Beginners can partake in the action at Cardrona Alpine Resort, which boasts a top-notch ski school and terrain that caters to novices. After adventure sports lovers get their fill of wintry pastimes — from June to October in the Southern Hemisphere — they can relax at Ruby’s Cinema & Bar, a low-key, post-ski haunt or check out Lake Bar to take in your surroundings. As for accommodations, the Distinction Wanaka Alpine Resort offers a wallet-friendly lodging option.

Beaufort, North Carolina

While this idyllic southern village along North Carolina’s Inner Banks draws visitors with its picturesque scenery, charming inns and bed-and-breakfasts and romantic atmosphere year-round, in the cooler months, Beaufort transforms into a festive winter wonderland. The main event is the Crystal Coast Christmas Flotilla, when brightly lit boats bob in the harbor each December. Other festive events include a holiday stroll and food tour with wine tastings and festive decorations and a candlelit historic homes walking tour. After painting the town, retreat to the Ann Street Inn, which is within walking distance of top attractions like Front Street and offers gracious hospitality and spacious rooms outfitted with Jacuzzi tubs.
