The Workplace Is Really Taking a Toll on Americans, Report Says

After a difficult day at work, you’re likely both physically and emotionally exhausted. And per new research, such exhaustion is happening across the American workforce.

According to a survey from the RAND Corporation, Harvard Medical School and UCLA, more than one-quarter of American workers claim to not have enough time to do their work (this faction mostly made up of white-collar workers). One-half say they have to finish tasks outside of work to make sure everything gets done.

About 75 percent of American workers claim to have “intense or repetitive physical exertion” while working at least 25 percent of the time in their job.

What’s more, about 1 in 5 workers report experiencing “a hostile or threatening social environment.” Younger female workers are the most likely to endure unwanted sexual advances. For younger men, verbal abuse is more likely to happen.

Stress plays a part for both less-educated and more-educated people, according to lead author Nicole Maestas, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and adjunct economist at RAND Corporation. The survey consisted of 3,066 adults and was conducted in 2015.

Not everything in the report was negative. For example, 8 out of 10 Americans say they have steady and predictable work during the year, though 1 in 3 people claim to not have control regarding their schedule.

Further, 4 out of 5 people surveyed say their job gives them “meaning” most of the time or all of the time. But approximately two-thirds of people feel somewhat of a mismatch between their current working conditions and their desired ones.

It appears many are at least finding a positive support system in the workplace. One-half of those surveyed say their boss is supportive and that they work with very good friends.

As for what employers should make of the results? “There’s a message for employers here,” Maestas told CBS News. “Working conditions really do matter.”
