Amazon.com (AMZN) and Netflix (NFLX) took home their first Oscars Sunday night, marking streaming services’ continued push into major entertainment awards shows.
Amazon’s “Manchester By the Sea” won best original screenplay and best actor for Casey Affleck. The company will stream the movie on its Prime Video service this year, reports Reuters. The streaming service also received the award for best foreign language film for “The Salesman.” Netflix received a documentary short-subject win for “The White Helmets.”
“It will make them a must-subscribe destination for film fans,” Paul Dergarabedian, comScore senior media analyst, told Reuters.
Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel poked fun at Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos during the ceremony, much like Jimmy Fallon did at the Golden Globes last month.

Both Amazon and Netflix have racked up Emmy and Golden Globe awards in the past, predominantly for television, and Affleck won a Golden Globe for best actor in a drama for “Manchester By the Sea.” Winning Oscars, though, puts these services in the leagues of large studio winners like Walt Disney Co. (DIS) and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.
Disney won four Oscars this year, among them best documentary (“O.J.: Made in America”) and best animated feature (“Zootopia”).
Lionsgate’s “La La Land” and “Hacksaw Ridge” gathered six and two wins, respectively. For a moment it looked like “La La Land” was going to grab a seventh when presenter Faye Dunaway announced it won for best picture, though it turned out independent studio A24’s “Moonlight” actually won the prize. The shocking turn of events sent Twitter into a frenzy.
