American Airlines Group (AAL) Limits Bags for Basic Economy Passengers

American Airlines (ticker: AAL) will soon offer a new basic economy fare option — though a markdown in price may cost some passengers more than they bargained for in terms of convenience.

One caveat of the new fare option is that consumers will only be allowed one carry-on item that must fit under the seat, like a purse or small backpack, according to a news release. They won’t be able to stow anything overhead. Passengers with bigger carry-ons (i.e. a rollerboard bag) need to visit the ticket counter and will have to pay a checked bag fee, in addition to a $25 gate service charge.

Basic economy customers will be seated in the main cabin, though will board last, and they won’t be able to refund or change tickets nor be eligible for same-day flight change or same-day standby.

“American Airlines now has something to offer every customer, from those who want simple, low-price travel to those who want an ultra-premium experience via first class,” American Airlines President Robert Isom said in a statement. “Importantly, this new fare product also gives American the ability to compete more effectively with the growing number of ultra low-cost carriers.”

American‘s new option is slated for Feb. 10 in certain markets.

Business Insider points out United Airlines (UAL) revealed a similar program in November to start in the second quarter. Delta Air Lines‘ (DAL) basic economy initiative isn’t as limiting, as consumers are still able to take carry-on bags aboard. They still have to abide by seat limitations akin to American and United.
