Karma Puts GoPro Inc Into the Drone Business (GPRO)

GoPro Inc (ticker: GPRO) announced a slew of new products Monday, though one clearly stands — err, soars — as the real spectacle: a drone called Karma.

The company’s CEO, Nicholas Woodman, emphasized Karma’s features, including “Hollywood-caliber aerial, handheld and gear-mounted image stabilization into a backpack” in a news release. He also says a beginner could even use it.

That said, users could still benefit from proceeding with caution. Sean O’Kane from The Verge described his experience flying the Karma drone — one where he “got a little cocky.” “Before I could tap the auto-landing button, the drone set itself on the ground right next to a rock,” he writes. “Karma only stands about three inches off the ground, so the rotor clipped the rock. Oops.”

Consumers can purchase Karma starting Oct. 23, with three options: without a GoPro camera ($799.99 MSRP), with HERO5 Black ($1.099.99 MSRP) and starting in early 2017, with HERO5 Session ($999.99 MSRP).

To check out Karma in action, Business Insider has GIFs highlighting the product’s specs.

Karma is GoPro’s first entry into the drone market, where it joins publicly traded companies such as Alphabet ( GOOG, GOOGL), Amazon.com ( AMZN), Lockheed Martin Corp. ( LMT) and Boeing Co. ( BA).
