Final 4 candidates revealed in quest to have women on $20 bill

WASHINGTON — Four candidates have been named in the push to put a woman’s face on the $20 bill.

After more than 256,000 votes were cast, the final four candidates are Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Wilma Mankiller.

Women On 20s, the group behind the movement, says the finalists came from an initial list of 100 candidates. According to the organization, Roosevelt, Tubman and Parks were named by as many as half of the voters as one of the top three in the first round.

“Because of strong public sentiment that people should have the choice of a Native American to replace Andrew Jackson, Cherokee Nation Chief Wilma Mankiller, was added to the final ballot,” Women on 20s states on its website.

Earlier this spring, the movement gained national attention as people shared selfies with the $20 bill to support the effort.

The group says it hopes to get one of the candidates printed on the $20 bill by 2020, marking the centennial of the women’s suffrage movement.

People can now vote for one of the final candidates to replace Andrew Jackson on the bill, but a date has not yet been named for when voting closes.
