WASHINGTON — On New Year’s Day, the Arlington County Board hit the ground running as it upheld its long-running tradition of meeting on the first day of the New Year to elect a new chair and vice chair.

The Arlington County board elected Mary Hynes to be its 2015 chair and Walter TeJada as its vice chair.

Hynes says, for the fourth year, she’ll keep “Open Door Mondays.” Hynes says board members will be available from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays to talk to residents at certain locations during the month — no appointments needed.

But her big initiative is a longterm  planning effort called the Arlington Community Facilities Study – a Plan for the Future.

She says the goal is to develop a framework to assess the county’s public facilities and to develop criteria for the location of new facilities.

“Once we build a building it’s there 50 years,” says Hynes.
