8 things to start your Friday, including a classic Winter Classic and Muriel Bowser takes over (Video)

Good morning and welcome to your Friday — and Happy New Year! Here’s some of your business:

1. AM News Talkers:

The Washington Capitals and all involved couldn’t have scripted a better Winter Classic outdoors at Nationals Park here in D.C. New Year’s Day. Ideal temperatures and an even ideal-er ending as, with seconds to go and the score 2-2, it looked as though it would be an OT event in the exciting faceoff vs. the Chicago Blackhawks. Not about to happen: The Caps nailed it — thanks to Troy Brouwer’s stunning power-play goal — with some 12 seconds left in regulation, winning 3-2. The nearly 43,000 fans who attended also saw pregame and intermission performances from the likes of Billy Idol, Gavin DeGraw and Lee Greenwood. Check out our attached video and come back for a slideshow we’ll post later.

It’s a big day Friday filled with changes in D.C. politics. Mayor-elect Muriel Bowser becomes Mayor Muriel Bowser. It’s inauguration day Friday for Bowser, seven members of the D.C. Council and Attorney General Karl A. Racine. It’s in the A.M. at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Come back to the Washington Business Journal later Friday morning and follow our coverage.

2. Weather: We’re looking at partly cloudy skies with temps reaching into the upper 40s. Not bad considering how cold it’s been. But don’t get excited. We’re looking at cold, messy weather moving in Saturday and then — what? — temps in the 60s Sunday. Colder weather moves in next week. Here. Have a look.

3. Business travel: Check the status of your flight. And Flightstats.com also has the details. Before you scram, check out the national weather forecast. Rain, sleet and snow in the nation’s midsection. Rain in the South and an Arctic blast up north.

7. Sports smack for the coffee run: It’s all about the Winter Classic, yo. See above.

8. Tanks a lot: Yeah, you saw this one coming… We rejoice of late every time we go to put gasoline in our cars as prices continue to plummet. But as of the new year, add 5 cents per gallon to that drop, if you live in Virginia. As The Associated Press reports, with the new year comes a new tax on gasoline. You have former Gov. Bob McDonnell to thank for the hit, designed to help pay for a $6 billion transportation funding package.

End note: That’s it for today. See you bright and early Monday.
