WASHINGTON — District of Columbia residents plan to honor the memory of
Marion Barry Friday with a lengthy procession and community memorial
service.
A casket bearing the remains of the District’s former mayor will be driven
around the city for three hours Friday. The procession is scheduled to depart
the
John A. Wilson building at 9:30 a.m., heading east on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.

-East on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
-Turn right to south on Third Street, NW to Independence Avenue, SW
-Turn left onto Independence Avenue, SW and travel southeast on Washington
Street to South Capitol Street, SE
-Turn tight onto Southbound South Capitol
-Proceed onto the Service Road towards M Street, SE
-Turn left on M Street to 11th Street Bridge
-Cross bridge to Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE
-Pass constituent office 2100, Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., SE
-Pass W Street at MLK to Union Temple and Union Grill
-Talbert Street, SE – Stop to acknowledge Marion Barry’s last residence
-Pass Sumner Road, SE to acknowledge Barry Farm
-Continue south down Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE
-Pass St. Elizabeths Highview – Stop to acknowledge 12-year residence
-Continue south on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE
-Turn left onto Trenton Street, SE
-Turn left on 4th Street, SE toward Mississippi Avenue, SE
-Turn left on Mississippi Avenue, SE to Ballou High School
-Continue down Mississippi Avenue past Southeast Tennis and Learning
Center
-Turn right onto Wheeler Road, SE
-Continue on Wheeler Road to Southern Avenue, SE
-Continue down Southern Ave to end at Temple of Praise Church, 700 Southern
Avenue, SE
Drivers should expect delays and road closures along the procession route.
The procession is scheduled to end at 12:30 p.m. at the Temple of Praise
Church. There, a five-hour public viewing will be held
for Barry. Later Friday, the church will host a community memorial service,
where the Rev. Al Sharpton will deliver a eulogy.
The official memorial service for Barry is set to be held Saturday at the
Washington Convention Center. A private burial at Congressional Cemetery will
immediately follow the memorial service.
Barry served four terms as major before his death last month at age 78.
