Nearly 165K sign up under ACA in Virginia. Here’s what’s happening around the region.

Nearly 165,000 Virginians have signed up for health coverage so far under Healthcare.gov during open enrollment, according to the first 50-state report released Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In all, 4 million enrolled or reenrolled in plans using Healthcare.gov or the handful of state exchanges, according to the report, including Maryland and D.C.’s exchanges between Nov. 15 and Dec. 15.

Meanwhile, in D.C., the Health Benefit Exchange Authority reported 1,886 new enrollees and 13,100 re-enrollees in private health insurance plans using DC Health Link so far in time to receive coverage on Jan. 1.

In Maryland, health exchange officials announced enrollments in private health plans exceeded 81,000 earlier this month. A report released Monday showed Montgomery and Prince George’s County led the number of signups with about 34,100 and 22,300, respectively.

A recent analysis by the exchange also showed the pace of online enrolling has dipped in recent days. As my colleague Sarah Gantz at sister publication Baltimore Business Journal pointed out — surprise, surprise — people apparently don’t want to shop for their health insurance plans over their holiday.
