WASHINGTON — When researchers set out to find the average price of
groceries
for a healthy meal — chicken breasts, potatoes, apples and milk — they found
startling differences between Virginia and Maryland.
DietsInReview.com has found that while the average nationwide price
for
the meal is about $15, the same meal would cost almost double that in Virginia
— $27.48 — the highest price in the nation.
The Maryland price for the meal, $14.90, is very close to the national
average. D.C. was not included in the study.
The point of the study is to determine the average price for feeding a family
of
four a healthy meal, versus the cost of eating at fast-food restaurants, where
the researchers figure an average single meal costs about $6.50.
While the groceries for the meal registered the highest in Virginia, they came
in the lowest in Idaho, at $9.33.
