Train derails in Algiers killing 1, wounding 65

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — Officials say a passenger train has derailed near the downtown Algiers’ train station, killing one person and wounding 65, including one in serious condition.

The state news agency says the commuter train was moving to another track to make way for the express Algiers-Oran train when its first three cars jumped the rails early Wednesday morning.

Investigators have recovered the train’s recorders in effort to discover what went wrong.

Train service in the greater Algiers metropolitan area is suspended but is expected to resume as normal Thursday.
