DENVER (AP) — Toronto Maple Leafs center Daniel Winnik has left Thursday’s game against Colorado with a serious injury after hitting his head on the ice.
Winnik was injured 45 seconds into the game when he collided with Avalanche defenseman Jan Hejda near the Colorado blue line. He fell awkwardly on the right side of his head and flipped onto his front. He lay motionless while trainers from both teams secured him on a backboard and took him off the ice.
The team reported on twitter that Winnik was “alert and moving all of his extremities” while being examined by the team doctor. The team said Winnik was not transported to the hospital but he did not return.
Winnik, who played two years with the Avalanche, has one goal and six assists in 13 games this season.
