Man flees Montgomery County cops, ends up in hospital

WASHINGTON –A Gaithersburg, Maryland, man is in grave condition today
after he fled police during a traffic stop, and then crashed his vehicle, just
up the road.

According to a release by the Montgomery County Police Department, the
collision
occurred on Aspen Hill Road at Marianna Drive Saturday night at
approximately 9:00 p.m.

Police say police observed an unoccupied, 2007 Honda Civic parked in
the fire lane in front of the Aspen Hill Beer and Wine located on Connecticut
Avenue in the Aspen Hill Shopping Center. As The officer parked his police
cruiser behind the vehicle, 21-year-old Annal Upadhyaya
of Federal Court in
Gaithersburg, returned to his vehicle.

The officer determined that Upadhyaya had a suspended driver’s license and was
not authorized to drive. After calling for a tow truck, Upadhyaya asked if he
could retrieve his cell phone from the car. As he did, Upadhyaya jumped in and
drove away at a high rate of speed, according to police.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle “but lost sight of it as it traveled
west on Aspen Hill Road.” Officers located the car on its side, just west of
Marianna Drive. Upadhyaya had been ejected from the vehicle and was found
unconscious on the sidewalk.

He was transported the driver to Suburban Hospital where he is in grave
condition, police said Sunday morning. A preliminary investigation indicates
he was traveling west on the curve on Aspen Hill Road and “for reasons still
under investigation,” began to overturn. The vehicle then struck a sign
and a utility pole before coming to rest on the driver’s side against an
unoccupied, parked vehicle on the north side of Aspen Hill Road. He was
ejected
from the vehicle at some point during this time. Family members have been
notified.
