James Madison to buy Harrisonburg steam plant

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) — The city of Harrisonburg is selling its steam plant to James Madison University.

The Daily News-Record (http://bit.ly/10eWkye ) reports that the James Madison Board of Visitors executive committee approved the purchase on Saturday.

James Madison senior vice president Charles King told the committee that he plans to seek state funding for 60 percent of the acquisition’s $4.2 million cost. He says the university can afford the full cost if its request for state funds is rejected.

The plant serves university residence halls, a dining hall and a student center that are considered auxiliary enterprises. The city asked the university in June to take over the plant.

King says James Madison will continue to redirect excess steam from its existing steam plant to the facility.
