Image of Asia: Child’s play in ragpickers colony

The Associated Press

In this photo by Altaf Qadri, a man lifts a child to help her sit on a wooden toy horse at an impoverished resettlement colony in New Delhi. The colony known as Gazipur on the eastern outskirts of the Indian capital is inhabited by nearly 1,000 people, overwhelmingly ragpickers. They are poor migrants from West Bengal state in eastern India. They salvage items such as toys, polythene bags, plastic and electronic goods from landfills. They keep whatever they find useful for their families and sell the rest for recycling.
