MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Simon is continuing to weaken in the Pacific off Mexico’s coast.
The storm’s maximum sustained winds early Monday have decreased to near 45 mph (75 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center says additional weakening is forecast and Simon is expected to become a remnant low on Tuesday. The storm, which had previously been a hurricane, is centered about 235 miles (375 kilometers) southwest of Punta Eugenia, Mexico, and is moving northward at 7 mph (11 kph).
Simon is expected to produce rainfall of 3 to 6 inches in coming days across the central and southern areas of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. On Tuesday, that rainfall is expected to spread to parts of the U.S. southwest. Large swells also are expected to intensify along the Southern California coast.
