You read that right: Revolution Growth co-founder and Washington Wizards/Capitals owner Ted Leonsis reveals that, if the Wizards make the playoffs, not only will he get a mohawk haircut, he’ll adopt the nickname “Sexual Caramel.”
That’s courtesy of Wizards forward Martell Webster, via Ted’s Take(and HT to DC Sports Blog for bringing it to our attention).
The mohawk talk started last week when center Marcin Gortat (himself sporting a new ‘do) did a guest turn on ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption” as Stat Boy. The Leonsis-owned Monumental Network posted a behind-the-scenes video Oct. 17 and, at about the 3:30 mark, Gortat reveals to show hosts Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser that Leonsis will get a mohawk if the Wizards make the playoffs (and it should be noted the Wiz are a chic pick to go deep in the playoffs).
Leonsis chose to “set the record straight” on his blog Monday— the Wizards must advance further than last year, and he gets the haircut and the new persona.
We love what we assume to be the “Coming to America” homage concocted by Webster. It also seems part and parcel with what we wrote last November about the evolution of Leonsis as a sports team owner. He was more philosophical then, alluding to his “emotional wallet” and balancing his burning desire to win with the need to take a long view in the business of sports. Applause to Leonsis in this case for not only playing along but giving proper respect to Jackson Heights’s own Mr. Randy Watson. Give it up!
No word yet on whether Washington Business Journal Editor-In-Chief Doug Fruehling will get a mohawk if we hit our October Web traffic goal.
As for Leonsis, imagine what he might do should D.C. land the 2024 Summer Olympics.
