BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have hired Chili Davis as their hitting coach.
Davis held that job with the Oakland Athletics the past three seasons and with Boston’s top minor-league team at Triple-A Pawtucket in 2011. In a 19-year playing career as an outfielder and designated hitter, Davis was a three-time All-Star.
The Red Sox also announced Thursday that Victor Rodriguez would return for a third season as assistant hitting coach.
The 54-year-old Davis succeeds 45-year-old Greg Colbrunn, who held the job two seasons. The Red Sox said this month he chose not to return. Colbrunn suffered a brain hemorrhage June 4 and returned on a part-time basis late that month. He said after the season he was considering a break from baseball to spend more time with his family.
