RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Dominion Virginia Power is reviewing what led a nuclear reactor at its Surry power plant to trip offline.
The company says the reactor automatically shut down Monday morning when an apparently erroneous sensor signal was detected by the 838-megawatt reactor’s protection system.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1wyR2YU) that Dominion expects the unit to return to service soon.
Monday’s shutdown came after a 944-megawatt reactor at Dominion’s North Anna power station returned to service Friday after a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage.
The company’s four nuclear units in Virginia carry the base load of its power demand, providing about 40 percent of its customers’ electricity usage.
Dominion Virginia Power is the state’s largest electric utility with nearly 2.4 million customers.
