PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins played “O Canada” before their game Wednesday night against Philadelphia to pay tribute to a Canadian soldier killed during an attack in Ottawa.
A sell-out crowd belted out the Canadian national anthem as the Canadian flag was flashed on the scoreboard and projected onto the ice.
Corporal Nathan Cirillo died Wednesday after being shot at point-blank range standing guard at the nation’s war memorial. The gunman, identified as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, was later shot and killed by the sergeant-at-arms.
The NHL postponed the scheduled game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators following the attack.
The Penguins and Flyers feature rosters filled with Canadian players, including reigning league MVP Sidney Crosby.
