In this photo by Mukhtar Khan, an Indian paramilitary soldier stops civilians at a checkpoint during a general strike in Srinagar, the main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Separatist leaders called for the strike on Monday, as they do every year on Oct. 27, the anniversary of the day in 1947 that Indian troops landed in the mostly Muslim Himalayan region. Most residents today favor either independence or merging the region with neighboring Pakistan, which controls its own portion of Kashmir.
