Gardner-Webb holds off Charlotte 27-24

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) — Lucas Beatty threw for 362 yards, including a 71-yarder to Deonte Swinton for the go-ahead touchdown, to lead Gardner-Webb to a 27-24 win over Charlotte on Saturday.

Beatty was 32 of 47 with an interception, Swinton finished with seven catches for 120 yards, and J.J. Hubbard returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown that put Gardner-Webb (3-3, 3-0 Big South) on the board in the first quarter.

Charlotte (3-3) took the lead in the second quarter when Branden Dozier intercepted a Beatty pass and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown that made it 17-14. But Gardner-Webb scored 13 straight points and kept the 49ers out of the end zone until late in the fourth quarter when Austin Duke hauled in an 80-yard TD strike.

Duke finished with 129 yards on seven catches, and Demarjai Devine had two catches for 114 yards and a touchdown.
