WASHINGTON — Adam Sandler will star in and produce four new films, but you don’t have to go to theaters to see them.
Netflix announced Thursday it will team up with the actor and his production company, Happy Madison Productions, to make four feature films that will premiere exclusively in the nearly 50 countries where Netflix operates.
The streaming service has been building its empire and moving into producing original movies that bypass the usual release into theaters.
And Sandler could certainly help with that mission. His films, such as “The Water Boy,” “The Longest Yard,” “Big Daddy,” “50 First Dates,” “Click” and “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,” have grossed more than $3 billion globally at the box office.
“People love Adam’s films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages — everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line — not just in the U.S. but all over the world,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a news release.
The 48-year-old comedian says he jumped at the opportunity to work with Netflix.
“When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said yes for one reason and one reason only … Netflix rhymes with Wet Chicks,” Sandler joked in a news release.
“Let the streaming begin!!!!”
Netflix has not revealed any details about what the films will be about or when they will be released.
