A strengthening Gonzalo takes aim at Caribbean

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — A new storm threatening to become a hurricane is racing toward the eastern rim of the Caribbean.

Tropical Storm Gonzalo was last tracked roughly 115 miles east of Guadeloupe (gwah-duh-LOOP’), and could reach hurricane strength as it crosses Puerto Rico Tuesday.

After crossing Puerto Rico, forecasters expect the storm to curve over the open Atlantic and stay away from the U.S. East Coast.

But first, Gonzalo is expected to move through parts of the Leeward Islands early Monday, producing up to 8 inches of rain, and some isolated areas could get as much as 12 inches.

The storm has prompted cruise ship companies to change their itineraries. Carnival Cruise Lines says its Breeze ship has canceled a visit in La Romana, Dominican Republic, and its Liberty and Conquest vessels are switching to western Caribbean ports to avoid the storm

Over the weekend, another storm, Tropical Storm Fay toppled utility poles and knocked out power to thousands of people in Bermuda before moving out over open ocean on Sunday.
