SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Authorities in the Dominican Republic say at least four inmates died and two guards were injured during an attempted prison escape orchestrated by armed gunmen.
General prosecutor Francisco Dominguez says the gunmen parked a vehicle outside the prison Friday and began shooting, apparently hoping to free the leader of a suspected drug trafficking ring who died during the attempted escape.
Dominguez says some of the inmates were armed and shot the two prison guards, who were hospitalized in serious condition.
He says the gunmen fled but no inmates escaped from the prison west of the capital of Santo Domingo.
