WEST POINT, Miss. (AP) — England’s Laura Davies and Trish Johnson teamed to win two nine-hole matches in the ISPS Handa Cup, and Juli Inkster and Meg Mallon rebounded to help the United States tie the World team 12-12 on Saturday at Old Waverly.
Davies and Johnson shot a 5-under 31 to beat Inkster and Mallon by three strokes in the morning better-ball matches, and had another 31 in the afternoon modified alternate-shot matches to top Val Skinner and Rosie Jones by three strokes.
“We’ve played a lot of golf together over the years and our games kind of gel,” Davies said. “For instance, hole 18 was a classic today. I tried to drive it close to the green and ended up going into the water, and she just stood up and smashed it straight down the middle.”
Inkster and Mallon had a 3-under 33 in the afternoon to beat Liselotte Neumann and Alicia Dibos by two strokes.
“It was disappointing to lose in the morning, but we were happy to come back and get a win for the team in the afternoon,” said Inkster, playing her first Legends Tour event.
The competition will close with 12 singles matches Sunday. Inkster will face Davies, and Johnson will play Laurie Rinker. Johnson recently won the Ladies European Tour’s Scottish Ladies Open.
The U.S. leads the series 6-1-1.
