PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia has a new heart, it hopes.
More than $50 million has been spent to transform a bleak plaza of granite and concrete in the shadow of its mammoth City Hall into what it hopes will be a new gathering place for residents and tourists alike.
It’s in keeping with city founder William Penn’s vision of how Philadelphia should be laid out. He is memorialized in a 37-foot bronze statue atop City Hall’s clock tower.
Dilworth Plaza is becoming Dilworth Park, complete with a great lawn, groves of trees, a programmable water fountain, an upscale cafe and what in the winter will become an ice rink.
After more than two years of construction, a ribbon-cutting Thursday will kick off a series of events at the park through the weekend.
