MEXICO CITY (AP) — Authorities in western Mexico say forensics tests have confirmed that a charred body found in a car is that of a kidnapped federal congressman.
The governor of Jalisco state says the remains are those of Rep. Gabriel Gomez Michel, a representative in the lower house of congress for the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party.
Gov. Aristoteles Sandoval wrote in his Twitter account Wednesday that “we will work to bring to justice those responsible for these acts.”
The congressman and his driver were kidnapped Monday, and their burned-out SUV was found Tuesday. The governor confirmed a second body found was the driver’s.
Dozens of mayors, local police chiefs and local congressmen have been killed in Mexico in recent years. But killings of federal congressmen are rare.
