How the Dow Jones average fared Monday

The stock market staged a late-day rally Monday, helping push the Dow Jones industrial average higher for the first time in a week. Investors had a couple pieces of positive news to get behind: a decent earnings report from Berkshire Hathaway and the announcement of a rescue package for a struggling Portuguese bank.

On Monday:

The Dow added 75.91 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 16,569.28.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 13.84 points, or 0.7 percent, at 1,938.99.

The Nasdaq composite rose 31.25 points, or 0.7 percent, to 4,383.89.

For the year:

The Dow is down 7.38 points, or 0.04 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 90.63 points, or 4.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 207.30 points, or 5 percent.
