California Chrome returns to work tab after break

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. (AP) — Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome is back working out again.

The 3-year-old colt ran three furlongs in 37.60 seconds on Friday at his home track of Los Alamitos. It was his first registered work since finishing in a tie for fourth in the Belmont Stakes on June 7, ending his bid to become racing’s first Triple Crown winner since 1978. He was given an extended vacation after running three major races in a five-week span.

California Chrome’s workout ranked 13th of 15 at the distance on Friday.

The colt, trained by Art Sherman, is being pointed toward the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic this fall at Santa Anita.
